Pinegrove recently came to people’s attentions following the release of their 2016 album Cardinal, which was met with critical success. A few days ago, they put out a self-released live album, Elsewhere, that include some of their more popular songs with all their proceeds going to the Southern Poverty Law Center.
I had heard murmurs of them before that, but had always considered them one of those new emo-punk bands. In some ways they are, but they are so much more than just emo. Definitely coming from the DIY punk world, there is a strong emphasis that the band takes in community service and political consciousness. They use quiet-loud noise dynamics and have that raw vocal sound. But they also have obvious American folk and almost country influences that really give them their own sort of in-between sound.
This is one of those up-and-coming bands that you should be sure to check out. What I collected is only to display their range. If you want more, be sure to check out their bandcamp page.
